How to Choose Stainless Steel for Architectural Hardware
Selecting stainless steel for architectural hardware involves more than choosing a material grade. Application, environment, product geometry, surface finish, fabrication process and installation requirements should all be considered before production.
1. Consider the Application
Start with the function of the component. Door hardware, railing components, decorative panels, brackets and custom architectural assemblies may require different material and fabrication approaches.
For example, a decorative interior component may prioritize appearance and finish consistency, while an exterior railing component may require greater attention to environmental exposure and long-term surface performance.
2. Consider the Installation Environment
Interior and exterior applications can have significantly different environmental conditions.
Projects exposed to humidity, moisture, coastal conditions or other demanding environments may require a more corrosion-resistant stainless steel specification.
3. Choose the Appropriate Grade
304 stainless steel is widely used for general architectural applications, while 316 stainless steel is often selected for projects where additional corrosion resistance is required.
The appropriate grade should be confirmed according to the actual project environment and technical requirements rather than selected based only on appearance.
4. Define the Surface Finish
Finish should be specified early in the design process because it can influence both appearance and manufacturing requirements.

5. Review the Product Design
Complex architectural hardware may involve laser cutting, CNC machining, bending, drilling, welding, polishing and assembly.

6. Confirm Installation Requirements
Connection details, fixing methods, glass thickness, hole locations and site conditions can all affect the final product design.
For custom projects, providing drawings or reference samples at the quotation stage allows the manufacturing requirements to be reviewed before production.
